Medieval Castle Set in One of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy

This property is on the market with Italy Sotheby’s International Realty. Price is disclosed upon application with the listing agency.

This remarkable property is set in Torre Alfina, conveniently located at the border of Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany in central Italy.

Classified as one of “The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy” —I Borghi più belli d'Italia — Torre Alfina offers plenty of authentic charm with its cobblestone streets and ancient stone houses.

It’s also surrounded by the Sasseto Forest, described by National Geographic as ‘Snow White's forest’ due to its ancient trees and lush undergrowth.

Towering above the village and offering panoramic views of the Italian countryside, this imposing castle offers a magnificent blend of historical and architectural elements.

The castle offers 53,819 ft2 (5000 m2) of interior space spread across five levels, with 35 bedrooms and panoramic views from its five towers.

The ground floor (piano nobile) features a grand gallery adorned with frescoed walls, vaulted ceilings with inlaid wood, statues, and marble floors, with large arched windows overlooking the village and the verdant Lazio countryside.

The castle’s origins trace back to the early Middle Ages, specifically the 8th century, when it was first erected as a fortress by the Monaldeschi della Cervara family.

Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous transformations, each adding layers of history and style to its structure, such as the significant renovations during the Renaissance under Sforza Monaldeschi.

The artistic touches of the same masters who worked on Orvieto Cathedral and Siena’s cityscape are evident in the inner courtyard, frescoed rooms, and monumental fireplace.

It was further radically redesigned in 1880 by Count Edoardo Cahen d'Anvers, who hired architect Giuseppe Partini and renowned gardeners Henri and Achille Duchêne.

The Renaissance garden, a masterpiece of design, includes geometric hedges, a serene fountain, and meticulously arranged flower beds, blending nature and art in perfect harmony.
