Italian Castle on the Ligurian Riviera
The medieval-style Castello Capelli was built in the early 1900s, commissioned by local nobles, the Casati family, and built as a holiday retreat to host Queen Margherita.
Capelli Castle was never visited by the sovereign, however, who preferred Bordighera as a base to explore the Italian Riviera on her holidays.
Even without a royal stamp of approval, the castello has become something of an icon for the coastal medieval village, which dates back to the 11th century.
Offering over 12,000 square feet of interior space, the castle has 11 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, and spacious living areas that spill out onto balconies, verandas, and panoramic terraces.
The 1.7 acre property has a dramatic setting on Punta Aspera, high in a pine forest overlooking the tourist port of Varazze and less than 100 feet from the Ligurian Sea.
The walled village has long been a popular seaside resort for European aristocracy, and the town is famous for the beauty of its gardens, orchards, and lemon trees.
Varazze is located in the province of Savoy, some 30 km west of Genoa.
