Georgian Estate on the Irish Riviera

Georgian Estate on the Irish Riviera

Francis York

This commanding Georgian mansion, Stone Hall was built in 1760 by the local Allen family as the first in a trio of houses built on the property, including Seamark and the Rectory

The Georgian residence was built on the gently sloping hillside overlooking the picturesque Glandore Harbour in west Cork, in one of the prettiest villages in Ireland.

One hour to the city of Cork, the area has become something of a millionaire’s playground, with its sailing and fishing community, stunning natural beauty, and great bars and restaurants.

The current owners, an Irish-UK couple, bought it in 1989. A serious ‘fixer-upper’, the property was completely dilapidated, with overgrown gardens, and trees growing inside the looted Georgian residence, missing its doors, windows and fireplaces, in addition to its roof.

It turns out this was a common fate for many grand and historic residences throughout Ireland when the government introduced the roof tap in the 1950s—if the property had no roof, there were no taxes to pay. The owners of Stone Hall took the roof off their Georgian mansion, and the rest is history.

The couple would go to great lengths to restore the 5000 square foot property in the early 1990s, sourcing oak floors from old school houses, and slates from Wales.

The 8-bedroom and 7-bathroom residence is waiting for the next owner to reimagine and update the Georgian mansion for its next chapter.

With views spanning out to the Adam & Eve islands, the waterfront property offers total privacy with a gated entrance and woodland setting.

The Georgian mansion comes with a striking walled garden behind the house, a summer house, and sloping terraced lawns with direct access to the sea and private mooring.
