A Converted Chapel Overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice
This property is on the market for €3,500,000, listed with Venice Real Estate.
This converted 19th century chapel overlooks the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.
The unique private residence is located in Venice’s Dorsoduro district in Campo San Vio, once the site of the church of San Vio.
The church once played an important part in the history of the Venice Republic. The day of St. Vito (June 15) celebrates the discovery of the Plot of Baiamonte Tiepolo in 1310.
He plotted, with a number of important figures, like the Tiepolo, te Querini, and Badoer families to overthrow the government of the Doge Gradenigo to establish a more popular government.
The plot was discovered just in time, it’s conspirators executed or exiled, and Baiamonte Tiepolo's house in Sant' Agostino was symbolically razed to the ground. Its marble jambs were donated to the San Vio Church, to give thanks to the saint for averting danger.
The church became an important site visited annually by the Doge and his entourage, and the existing buildings surrounding the church were demolished to accommodate the procession, resulting in one of the largest waterfront squares in Venice.
The square is named after the church of San Vio, which stood for over 1000 years until it was demolished in 1813 and replaced by the current Oratorio chapel.
The chapel incorporated some of the original church elements, like its pink marble columns and the marble jambs taken from Baiamonte Tiepolo's house in the 14th century.
In its current incarnation, the property has been transformed into a unique private residence by its owner, a renowned architect, who has owned the property for over 40 years.
The 3272 square foot residence offers 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and several living rooms. The large windows feature one-way glass with views out over the campo, and the master suite on the 1st floor has a private balcony.
A living room and dining room are located in the former apse, and a large lounge for relaxing is set in the heart of the former chapel.
Accessible via Campo San Vio and through a lush private courtyard, the unique residence is unlike any other in Venice.
