400-Year-Old Villa Just North of Milan with Incredible Gardens
Nestled in the picturesque province of Lecco in Lombardy, just north of Milan and a short distance from Lake Como, lies a 400-year-old villa steeped in history and charm. Built in 1702 in the classic Lombard Barocchetto style, this 19,735-square-foot estate offers a rare glimpse into Italy’s rich architectural and horticultural heritage.
The villa sits at the heart of a 24.7-acre estate, surrounded by a blend of meticulously maintained English and Italian gardens.
At the front of the villa lies the English garden, designed in the 19th century with a romantic flair. Rare, centuries-old trees such as a 200-year-old oriental plane and Lebanon maples line the paths, alongside fountains and statues that evoke classical Roman influences. In contrast, the rear of the villa showcases terraced Italian gardens, marked by Baroque staircases, mosaic designs, and mythological sculptures.
Beyond the terraces, nestled in the hillside, visitors will discover the Secret Garden. This secluded oasis is a masterpiece of topiary art, fountains, and mythological statues, designed for quiet reflection and an air of mystery.
The Sala family, who built the estate, and Donna Mina Sala Trotti Bentivoglio, who expanded the grounds in the 19th century, shaped the property’s rich history. The villa even hosted members of the House of Savoy.
In the 1920s her nephew, Marchese Paolo Sommi Picenardi di Calvatone, continued to enhance the gardens, and this work continues today with his grandchildren.
Inside, the villa boasts 25 bedrooms, grand halls, a gallery, and even a private theater. Historical details, including frescoes and intricate moldings, have been carefully preserved. A small consecrated chapel dedicated to Saints Ambrose and Galdino—a relative of the original family—adds a unique historical touch.
The villa also includes a converted granary and three independent apartments, offering modern convenience alongside timeless elegance.
Today, the villa serves as a venue for prestigious events, from weddings to photo shoots, while also offering private tours of its breathtaking gardens. With its proximity to Milan, its architectural grandeur, and its unique blend of gardens, this Lombard villa is a rare and iconic piece of Italian history.
